The size of this huge is island is roughly igual to Switzerland, meaning that the distances are not short, but that doesn't make it any less interesting as a destination. When it comes to tourism, the village of Souré is the best place to stay in. This is where is most beautiful beaches and the famous farms (fazenda) are located in. Souré offers charming accommodation options and is also an excellent place to start your eco-tourism adventures no matter whether it's about birdwatching or horseback riding. Ilha do Marajó is one of the few places where you will be able to enjoy the peace and the harmony of nature without being disturbed.
LOCATION: Ilha do Marajó is formed by several islands separated by the rivers. There are daily ferry boats and a catamaran that connects the state capital Belem to the island of Salvaterra (the port of Camará). The distance is only about 80 km, but depending on the weather conditions the trip can take about 2½-3½ hours.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: The weather on Ilha do Marajó is very humid weather during the first 6 months of the year. If possible try to avoid the rainiest season from the end of December until April.
WHAT TO DO: Enjoy the most beautiful beaches of the island, Praia do Pesqueiro and Barra Velha. Visit one of the famous buffalo farms and the historical ruins of Joanes. Practise light hiking in the nature or take a ride on a buffalo. Try out the fluvial tours and explore the wonders of eco-tourism such as birdwatching.
